Deena - VGB in 2001 |
I received the following letter in 2002. I asked the writer if it would be ok to share this on my website and she said that she thought it would be a good idea because people need to know more about the risks of WLS. Perforation of the stomach is a listed complication of any surgery which includes a gastrectomy (stomach stapling): My name is Deena and I am 28 years old and live in Ohio. 1/11/01 I had the VBG done, an instrument during the surgery poked a hole in the back wall of my stomach, although this was not known until 2 days after the original surgery and I had become deathly septic. Returned to surgery 2 more times, and they could not repair the damage, drains were inserted and I was fed through a G-tube for 3 months, my original surgeon gave up on my case and handed me over to the Chief of Surgery at another hospital. I was in the hospital 2 months, the hole took 14 weeks to heal, no eating or drinking for 14 weeks. I was on a ventilator for 2 days after surgery #2. Not only did I go through this traumatic event but my family as well. Currently I have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, in therapy and on medication for depression. I have lost 80#, gallbladder removed 2 months ago...this year has been hell. And now going through the stress of a lawsuit. I feel that people see others Like Carnie Wilson and rush to do this without thinking, my research was 1 yr long, search for the right surgeon was the same. The surgeon who performed the operation no longer does any procedures with weight loss since my case. That says a lot about it.
